Learning how to effectively communicate and make connections with people is crucial for any business owner. How you present and conduct yourself makes all the difference in the world when a person decides to use your services. Are you connecting with people or rubbing them the wrong way?

As an example, my awesome assistant Bonita told me someone called my office about the complimentary event I am putting together for women entrepreneurs this Saturday. The person was rude and demanding and clearly missed the fact that I am spending money to put on a complimentary event for women in the community. While just about every other woman has thanked me for doing something that most would not, this person chose to put demands on ME! Imagine that? I have learned from my mentors and own experiences a long time ago, that as soon as someone shows you who they are through negativity, then you quickly make the decision that is not a person you want to work with or bring around other positive people. As an entrepreneur you have the option of deciding who you do and do not want to work with. Some clients are just not worth it and it defeats the purpose of you doing your own thing and having control over your own destiny. Never settle for working with someone who will make you miserable!

On the flip side, I also received a beautiful thank you note in the mail from an awesome business women who saw me present for Woman Entrepreneur of the year in Dallas. This already very successful woman told me she learned so much for my presentation and thanked me for sharing. That brought a smile to my face. It only takes a second to thank someone for sharing their time, expertise or kind words…and it goes a long way in making a connection that could one day turn out to be huge.

While I was in Miami out shopping, I noticed the business owners doing more than usual to attract clients and customers into their shops. Miami ALWAYS has people working to hustle up people to dine at their restaurants or shop in their stores. They don’t just let people walk by, they hire people to actually talk to you and get you to buy from them. Everyone is hustling up business. But this time, I noticed them doing even more, probably in response to the economy which is of course the smart thing to do. Stores were holding fashion shows using their sales clerks to model and walk the runway IN THE STORE, all in an effort to get customers inside so they could sell them. I thought it was brilliant. But it also got me to thinking about how little most people do in their own business to bring in customers. You can’t just send an email or post your business link on Facebook, that doesn’t work. You HAVE to have a list of prospects that you can communicate with. Without a list, the key to ANY business, you will not get to the level you want. Having a list means you are targeting your ideal market. Doing anything else, means you are out there blindly marketing to anyone, many of who are not interested in what you are offering. Building your list is an ongoing process that successful entrepreneurs are working on continuously, that is how and why they are making money.

You have to have a system of marketing to people that is well thought out and delivers a clear and concise message that resonates with your target market. So if you do not have a list for your business that is a TARGETED list and you are not bringing in new prospects, then chances are I have just solved your business challenge. People are down-right lazy today! Everyone says they are serious about their business, but few do all that they can to make it successful. Everyone wants to be their own boss, but most are lousy at pushing themselves! Dan Kennedy who I closely follow said something profound today. Social media marketing, internet marketing, info-marketing, they are not MARKETING, they are just medias. They are ways to deliver your marketing message. While I already knew that, it dawned on me that many do not and were missing this basic concept. What good is Facebook or Twitter if you do not have a good marketing message that works to promote? People are being lulled into a false sense of security with such use of these medias. Yes, it is great that they are F*R*E*E* but once again, if you lack the marketing know how, they are useless.

The ONLY people making money using any type of media are those who have taken the time to learn a marketing system that works. How many different ways are you marketing your business? Facebook alone is not going to cut it. You along with thousands of other people are all competing for the same client in a very public forum. Talk about competition! Do you know how to go places that your competitors are not? Do you know how to protect your following from your competitors? Do you know how to talk to your prospects in a place that nobody else is? Just adding one more media or marketing funnel to your campaign can make all the difference in the world. If I relied on just one way of marketing my business, I would be eating beans out of a can right now, and any other successful entrepreneur will tell you the same thing!

Joan Rivers spoke a couple of hours ago. She is here because she is a smart businesswoman and has created an empire. Some of her words of wisdom: say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, and rise to the occasion no matter how scared you are or unsure. Do not give up even when others count you out. Be persistent, you canâ€™t be a successful entrepreneur without persistence. If you donâ€™t have the will, drive or motivation, then go work for someone else.

This year is shaping up to be quite busy, which I knew it would. I leave this week for Chicago to attend the Women on Fire retreat where I will be on a panel with Stedman Graham as the key note speaker. Then right after that I am off to Dallas for the Super Conference where I have been selected to compete for Woman Entrepreneur of the Year! I have to put together a 15 minute presentation that teaches and shows one of my launches using my marketing strategies and the monetary results of that launch. Iâ€™m thinking I am going to show proof of one of my $100,000 days and how I used my system to make that work. Iâ€™m excited and nervous!
